The Difference Between Snoring and Sleep Apnea

hi everyone thanks for tuning in to eZeLiving you know a couple of webisodes ago Istarted a conversation with you on the subject of sleep apnea I experienced the symptoms but Idecided to do the research and then I checked in withBR Medical Suites with Marc Mueller and we had aconversation on this subject and here's what he had to say a lot of people don't know the difference between snoring and sleep apnea

which is why I'm here Mueller what should I be concerned aboutélook, i mean your sleep is disturbed obviously and that is already not such agood sign so if you wake up at night it's alreadya sign of sleep apnea why is that soé it is actually thedifference is snoring makes just a sound like (.) however sleep apnea is like this (.)and then you stop for a couple of seconds and then you do this (.)

take a deep breath and you fall into silent sleep maybe again maybe some periods of snoring and then it repeats again now you need to know a little bit more about sleep during sleep you are not always in the same sleep level you're going stepbystepdown to level 4 and to REM sleep level and then again to sleep level 1and the whole thing repeats

every one and a half hours throughout the night. And there's acertain cycle that we should have it is called sleep architecture that should look all very nice you know but if you are going to a sleep level, let's say sleep level 3 where you're completely paralyzed andyou stop breathing you will come into a situation

the situation is you have no oxygen yourcarbon dioxide levels go high your heart starts beating like crazyall your systems are in an alarm stageyour cortisol levels go up and then at a certain stageyour alarm bells in your brain ring and wake you up to a higher sleep level usually we are asking for something called Epworth Sleepiness Scalethere are questions like do you fall asleep when you do your office worké

when you do some reading when you haveto read a paper or soé or do you even fall asleep when you arein a conferenceé I've had patients that fell asleep duringa conference it's really embarrassing but they fell asleep in a board meeting or if you are a driver many many truck drivers have this problemthey fall asleep at the steering wheel there are tutorials that show accidentsthat happen from that
