Treating Common Ailments With Acupuncture Acupuncture for Pain Problems
SARAH HAUER: Hi. I'm Sarah Hauer. SIG HAUER:And I'm Sig Hauer, and we're professional practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.SARAH HAUER: We're here on behalf of Expert Village. SIG HAUER: And welcome to our tutorial.SARAH HAUER: Acupuncture is probably more known for its treatment of pain than any otheraspect of health, and one of the reasons why it works so well is what we've talked aboutquite often about moving stuck chi and being able to access the body's own healing ability,to heal itself is one of the strengths of acupuncture as well. So, even if you havea chronic pain condition, I would encourage you to try options such as acupuncture orother energetic medicines as well because
there are alternatives available to you, andchronic pain can be a very overwhelming and debilitating health problem.
Flying After Vein Treatment My Advice About Long Haul Flights
One of the commonest questions I am askedis When can I fly after vein treatmentsé Well I am going to tell you what I advise. The mostfeared complication after any surgical treatment which is followed by a flight shortly afterwardsparticularly a long haul flight is deep vein thrombosis often abbreviated to DVT. DVT isa clot in the deep veins of the legs that can break free and travel to the lungs. Themedical term for clots lodging in the lungs is pulmonary embolism. If the clot is large, pulmonary embolism can be fatal. The reason clots may form after a long haulflight is that with prolonged sitting, particularly in cramped spaces, blood flows much more slowlyin the deep veins than when you are up and
about and moving around and slowly flowingblood tends to clot. In fact when you are perfectly still, there is very little flowat all in the deep veins. It is only when your muscles contract, squeezing the deepveins that blood is pushed back to the heart. Now imagine a situation in which you are renderedunconscious and motionless under general anaesthesia. If you have a general anaesthetic lastingfor more than 1 hour, there is very slow blood flow in the deep veins and the risk of DVTis relatively high. Combine that with a long haul flight shortly afterwards and you cansee that the risk of DVT and pulmonary embolism is even higher.Modern vein treatments such as endovenous
laser, radiofrequency ablation VNUS Closureand superglue (VenaSeal) can be performed under local anaesthetic as a walk in walkout procedure. During the procedure I actually encourage movement and the flow of the bloodin the deep veins is maintained so the risk of DVT is very low. Does that mean it is safeto take a long haul flight the next dayé In most cases probably the answer is probablyyes and the risk is probably very low. However the truth is we just dont know so it is wiseto plan your vein treatment so as to avoid a long haul flight for about a month aftertreatment. On the flip side, I usually advise avoiding vein treatment within 2 weeks ofgetting off a long haul flight. There is nothing
in the medical literature to back this up,but I think it is sensible and I prefer to be safe rather than sorry.I hope you have found this interesting. Do please remember to subscribe to be among thefirst to see my next tutorial. My name is Haroun Gajraj, thank you for watching.
