Losing Sleep AllNatural Ways to Fall Asleep and Get High Quality Sleep
Welcome to DrAxe . I'm Axe. Today Iwant to talk to you about something I came across here, an article I was reading recentlyon how, if you don't get enough sleep, or get good quality sleep, it can actually takeyears off of your life. Now sometimes I'll bring up how important sleep is and it's oneof the first things people tend to write off and say, quot;Well, I'm going to try and do otherthingsquot; or quot;We don't worry about itquot; but sleep is a really big deal. In fact listen to thisrecent medical study. In the Journal of Occupation and EnvironmentalMedicine, they did a study on over 18,000 women. And they found women who work the nightshift versus women who work the day shift,
have four times more cancer. Four times moreincidences of breast cancer if someone's working the night shift. Now this is important. Iknow for some of us, we can't get around what our hours are at work, but again this is animportant thing to recognize that your sleep cycle is so important for your longterm healthand for your life span. And specifically the people that came to mindand people they mentioned this article, were nurses who had to work the night shift. Iknow there is a lot of police officers who their schedule is always changing or in generalpeople working in factories and having to work the night shift. It can be a big problemfor your health. And I want to give you some
solutions for how to still get some good nightsleep and then if you're not sleeping well, some things you really need to start doing.First off, hey if your job is working the night shift, do your best to try and switchyour shift or get during the day time. Now that maybe a one or two year process of tryingto make that happen but do your best to get to that point. If you can't get to that point, what I recommend you do is, no matter what, get eight hours of solid sleep. So if yougo to bed at 4 a.m., sleep till noon. Again do your very, very best to get eight hoursstraight. Get in a cold dark room and do your best to get that eight hours straight. That is so, so important for getting your
body healthy. You know our body really iscreated to really fluctuate what you want to call circadian rhythm. So circadian rhythmshave to do when the sun sets and it rises. But your brain and your hormones and eventhe way your liver detoxes, it's based on light and darkness. And so again, you wantto make sure when you're sleeping, is in a dark place even if it's in the middle of theday. Now, a few other things that are importantwhen it comes to sleep. By the way let me say how much sleep is important to get. Sevento nine hours every single night is how much sleep you should be getting every night. Sevento nine hours. And actually I saw a recent
study where they said, when they looked atpeople living in 1910 versus 2010, so about 100 year difference people back in 1910 gotan average of an hour and a half more of sleep every single night. They averaged closer toeight and a half. Most Americans today average about seven hours or less of sleep a night.Another medical journal said if you sleep less than seven hours of sleep at night, yourchance of getting sick with a cold, a flu or another health problem, triples. So again, sleep is important. Here is my top sleeping tips. Number one, like I mentioned earlier, you want to make sure that your sleeping environment is dark, and it's a cold environment. Number two, try
to go to bed at the same time every night. So go to bed at 10 p.m. waking up at 6 a.m. So you get 8 hours of solid sleep at night. And I know it may not be perfect every night, but doing your very best to get in that rhythmof going to bed and waking up at the same time, that's important. Also nutritionally, do not eat a bunch of carbohydrates before you go to bed. Sugars, grains, pastas, rices, even beans and fruit. Lower your carbohydrate consumption beforeyou go to bed. That's why I suggest for dinner doing organic vegetables, nuts and seeds andorganic meat. So, organic meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Those are the things you shouldeat before dinner. Not a lot of other stuff.
Fish Oil Improves Mood Reduces Inflammation And Increases Cognitive Function Agrios ND
I want to talk about flax versus fish becausethis comes up a lot, and I like flax oil. It is an omega3 it's ALA but it doesnot contain EPA or DHA. You can create some EPA in the system from ALA, but you can'tget DHA, and DHA is really implicated in a lot of the cognitive benefits of fish oil.And so there is a vegetarian way to get DHA and that would be to do seaweeds. So Udo'sactually does make a vegetarian blend for people who don't want to take fish oil.I have to say I have tasted it. To me, it's a little bit bitter, but it's an alternativeoption if you want to have a vegetarian source. So anything that comes from the sea is goingto be higher in the EPA and DHA. Things that
are landlocated tend to higher in ALA interms of the omega3s, and then lots of omega6s. As much as nuts and seeds are good for us,they're really high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and so we have to actually take…themore polyunsaturated fatty acids we take in, vegetable oils in other words, the more wereally have to take in antioxidants just to make sure that those oils are not oxidizing.Fish oil, the major, major benefits is that they're very antiinflammatory, and theyreally help with cognitive function and mood, and there's just so much hard evidence onthis now that basically everyone takes fish oils now. The one thing I'll say is I really, really prefer that people will take oil versus
capsule, and the reason why is that, firstof all, it's more costeffective, but second of all, to get therapeutic dosing. So thestudies were all talking about antiinflammatory this and that, you really need upwards ofthree grams to start getting a really great antiinflammatory dose. And that doesn'tmean three grams of fish oil; it means three grams of EPA and DHA, which are the activeconstituents in the fish oil. It's the omega3 part of fish oil. So a lot of these capsuleswill say like, “Oh, 1,000 milligrams of fish oil, but that's not 1,000 milligramsof EPA and DHA. Per capsule in this one, 180 of EPA and 120 in DHA. So what's reallycommon is 400 to 700 milligrams per capsule
of actual omega3 fatty acid. You have totake a lot of capsules to get a really high dose. And so the other thing my patients freakout about is like, “Oh, it's going to be fishy. I can't do it. And if you havea really good fish oil that's not rancid, it's not going to be fishy. And so I willsay that cod liver oil actually tastes heavier than fish oil, just to make that distinctionbecause a lot of people are like, “Oh, I remember I took cod liver oil when I was akid and it was terrible. And a lot of the oil was oxidized anyways back in the day,so it was a little bit rancid so it made it fishier. But cod liver oil has a heavier taste. This one is by far my favorite. It's called
Finest Pure Fish Oil. It's made by Pharmax. There's one by Seroyal as well. Seroyal owns Pharmax. Now it's actually one andthe same, so one place has one, one has the other. I'm not attached. I mean, as longas you guys are getting clean oil. So we want to know that it's molecularly distilledand that it's not rancid. And you know, everybody freaks out around the metals withfish, and that's definitely something to think about. Most major companies do a verygood job of doing what's called molecular distillation, so all of the mercury has beenpulled out of the metals. That's not actually one of my bigger concern. My concern is oxidation. If oil has been left in heat too long, it's
rancid, and a lot of times, capsules willhave more oxidation that goes on than actual oil. If you open a bottle and don't useit for a long, long time because oxygen will start to get in the bottle. They're nitrogenflushedwhen they are made. So if this is sitting in your fridge for a year, you can smell it.Sometimes things will get a little bit more fishy. So as long as you're using things upquickly, that doesn't happen, but I actually encourage people, if you're going to ifyou really don't want to do the fish oil and you want to take the capsules biteyour capsules. And if they're fishy, that oil is not good oil. Your oil should not tastefishy. Someone told me not to buy the ones
